This is the standard method for converting spares. With
this spare system the target remains the same, and
only the starting position is adjusted.
The basis of the 3-6-9 system
is based on a simple principle: If the pins left
standing are on the right of the 1-pin ("headpin"),
move to the left. If the pins left standing
are on the left of the headpin, move to the right.
Simply put, move to the opposite side of the lane
than the pins that remain standing. The bowler
moves a set number of boards right or left depending
on which pins remain standing.
The
3-6-9 system uses two starting positions on the
approach: the strike starting position and the
10-pin starting position. There are also two
targets: the strike target and the 10-pin target.
These two targets are used for all spare
combinations.
As
with other spare systems, the primary pin of
interest is the "key pin". The pin closest to
the bowler is the key pin by definition.
Adjustments are based on the strike ball delivery
for left-side leaves, and the 10-pin alignment for
right-side leaves. Again, the pin closest to the
bowler is the key pin. The key pin governs
your spare alignment. The key pin must be the
first pin hit.
The 3-6-9 system is based on using the arrows as
your targeting guide. The actual calculations
are approximations since technically, the 3-6-9 is
more accurately 3.3-6.6-9.9 adjustments for changes
in your launch position. The point is, the
guide may need slight adjustments introduced by
bowler technique and mathematical approximation.
Still, this sparing technique provides a valuable
tool in enhancing your ability to pick up your
strikes.
